Spectrum Radio presents £1.3 million cheque for Chinese Earthquake Appeal
Spectrum Radio was proud to help present a cheque for over 1 million pounds to help victims of the Sichuan Earthquake in China.
Chinese businesses and community groups prominent in the UK's Chinese community raised the money, which was donated to the British Red Cross and the Chinese Embassy. Spectrum Radio was pleased to have Station Director John Ogden, together with other fundraisers, present the cheque to Lu Xu, the Chinese Consular General. Spectrum Radio's Chinese programme made appeals to its listeners to donate to help victims of the Sichaun devastation and were overwhelmed with the response from its UK based Chinese audience having raised nearly £10,000 and they continue to be inundated with support. Along with Spectrum Radio, over 50 Chinese community groups and businesses presented their cheques to the Chinese Embassy. A total of £1,349,580 was raised. This will go towards helping the victims that survived the earthquake in the Sichuan province of China that took nearly 70,000 lives.
Spectrum radio is Europe’s only radio station broadcasting to a multi-ethnic audience. Now broadcasting to over twenty (20) communities the station it has programmes on AM, DAB, Sky Digital and the Internet. Spectrum Radio has had strong links to the Chinese community since 1990, which made this appeal so important to the radio station and, furthermore, put them in such a prime position to make such a significant contribution whilst fundraising for its victims.
Presenter DJ Alice says “Its fantastic to have so many organisations putting in the effort to help raise funds. The appeal actually united people from different walks of life, which shows people’s concern. I was just amazed at the generosity of ordinary people, some people gave almost a week of their takings from their restaurants.”
Station Director John Ogden says “It was an honour to be asked to help present the cheque for this amazing amount of money. The efforts of the whole Chinese community have been astonishing.”
