HOW MANY?
London’s Jewish community numbers around 250,000. Those who descend from Spain and Portugal are known as Sephardim and those from Western, Central and Eastern Europe are Ashkenazim. Jewish communities in London are thriving, with Barnet, Hackney and Borehamwood boasting the largest Jewish populations. Most of the community belong to the traditional Orthodox synagogues, whilst a lesser proportion belong to non-Orthodox synagogues.
WHERE DO THEY LIVE?
Stamford Hill, in Hackney, north London, has long established itself as the home of the strictly orthodox Jewish community, followed by Golders Green. Hendon and Edgware in the London Borough of Barnet which boast countless numbers of restaurants and coffee shops. Barnet also has the highest proportion of Jewish residents of any local authority area in the UK.
