Our Broadcast Technology

We have six broadcast studios, any of which can go live on any one or more of our four Platforms – 558 kHz AM, D.A.B., SKY Channel 0185 and the Internet – at any time.

Additionally, some of our programmes come direct from remote studios, both in the London area and Worldwide. With all these inputs and outputs, we’ve long outgrown the “traditional” Radio Station model built around a single Air Switch controlling which individual Studio is live at any given time. We don’t “Air Switch”, we “Air Route”!

This is how it works:

All our Studios and outside feeds are piped into a series of computer-controlled mixing Routers. A matrix of these Routers make sure that the right Studio or feed goes On Air on the right Platform (or Platforms!) at the right time. Our Presenters and Technical Operators just need to be in their allocated Studio at the time of Broadcast, and their shows automatically go Live on AM, D.A.B, SKY or the ‘net or a combination of Platforms, enabling them to concentrate on making first class programming.

Spectrum's Chief Engineer - Ben Goodman

This cutting-edge system was conceived and designed by us and custom-built to our unique requirements and we believe it’s unlike anything you’d find in any other Radio Station. What it all means is that we can operate a cross-Platform, multi-Programme schedule with the complexity of a major international broadcaster, but without the legions of Engineers normally found in such Stations! In fact, a dedicated team of just two of us keep the whole thing ticking over.
