Did you know that there are more Tamils in London than Pakistanis and Bangladeshis?
HOW MANY?
The vast majority of Tamils in the UK live in the capital, with 200,000 people resident in London.
Many of these people are well-educated and very well off economically and have become established in British society. During the 1960s, understaffing in the NHS opened up the opportunity for many to become doctors and consultants; others managed to secure other white-collar jobs.
Tamils have migrated to the UK since the colonial era and refugees began to arrive after 1983 when the civil war started in Sri Lanka.
WHERE DO THEY LIVE?
The majority live in North London. But there are big communities in East Ham and Walthamstow in East London, Wembley in north-west London and Merton and Croydon in south London are also major centres.
HOW TO REACH THEM THROUGH THE SPECTRUM RADIO NETWORK
Spectrum has had Tamil programming since the 1990’s and now has the hugely popular ILC Tamil on 558 AM from 6pm to 9 pm for 3 hours every night and at www.spectrumradio.net.
